Jaw tension is a very common physical symptom of anxiety. You may notice clenching, tightness, teeth grinding, or even mild pain around your jaw and temples. This happens because anxiety activates your fight-or-flight response, which causes muscles to tighten — especially in the jaw, neck, and shoulders. Many people clench their jaw without realising it.The good news is that you can relax your jaw quickly.
🌿 1. Drop your tongue
Let your tongue rest gently at the bottom of your mouth.
Your teeth should not be touching.
🌿 2. Slow your breathing
Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds
Exhale slowly for 6 seconds
Repeat for one minute
This tells your muscles to relax.
🌿 3. Gentle jaw release
Open your mouth slightly and move your jaw slowly side to side.
Keep the movement small and relaxed.
🌿 4. Relax your shoulders
Jaw tension often comes from shoulder and neck tension.
Drop your shoulders and unclench your hands.
Jaw tightness from anxiety is not dangerous.
As your body calms, the tension will fade.
You are safe.
