How to Stop Overthinking at Night (A Gentle Way to Calm Your Mind)

Overthinking often becomes louder at night.
The day is over, everything is quiet, and your mind starts replaying conversations, worrying about tomorrow, or imagining worst-case scenarios.
This happens because your brain no longer has distractions.
Your thoughts finally have space — and if your nervous system is already tired, they can feel overwhelming.
The goal is not to “force your mind to be quiet.”
The goal is to give your mind something calm to focus on.

1)The 3–3–3 grounding method

Look around and name:

  • 3 things you can see
  • 3 things you can feel
  • 3 things you can hear
This brings your brain back to the present moment.

2)Slow breathing for racing thoughts

Breathe in for 4 seconds
Breathe out for 6 seconds
Longer exhales slow mental activity and reduce overthinking.

3)Write one single sentence

Instead of analysing everything, write one sentence in a notebook:
“Right now, I am safe. Tomorrow can wait.”
You don’t need to solve your thoughts at night.
